Advancing Careers with Apprenticeships

Apprentices have been pivotal to our business over the years.
We have supported learners at both college and university level apprenticeships as well as offering summer placements, providing young people with practical skills, valuable experience, and a pathway to long-term success.
Our biggest success story when it comes to investing in young talent is our very own Director, Adam Morris. Having started at TFS as an apprentice in the warehouse, Adam has worked his way all the way up to Director level in the space of 14 years.
We now have another apprentice called Adam in our midst who is making great strides. Adam Caddick, 21, is studying Business Management as part of a degree apprenticeship with Edge Hill University. He’s now in the third year of a six-year course and ahead of National Apprenticeship week, we caught up with him to find out what three main benefits he’s experienced since becoming a TFS apprentice.
“The first benefit would have to be the hands-on experience I’m gaining,” explains Adam. “I’m getting to experience working in lots of different business areas. For example, I started in the warehouse, and I am now working within the commercial team where I’ve learned about sales, procurement and much more. Getting this kind of real-world exposure alongside learning the theory will help fast track my career in the long term compared to class-room based students.”
Adam has also been given significantly more responsibility by the TFS team during his third year. “As well as being trained on a range of roles, I’ve been tasked with overseeing procurement,” continues Adam. “That means I source raw materials and make sure the warehouse team has everything they need to complete a job. I’ve learned so much and really enjoy seeing the outcome of the work I do.”
Thinking about the third main benefit of being an apprentice, Adam concludes: “You get paid while you’re gaining all this experience! Unlike many of my peers who opted for the traditional routes, I’ll be debt free (as the course is funded) and I’ll have a clear career pathway. It really does set you up for long term success and I don’t think enough people know about the apprenticeship opportunities available.”
We’ve enjoyed seeing Adam grow in skill and confidence during his time at TFS and have no doubt that this will continue.
As a business, we have found there are lots of benefits to working with apprentices, not least that we’re upskilling the next generation of the workforce and supporting our business needs now and into the future.
