Behind the scenes at TFS – Carl Sutton, senior production operative
Carl Sutton, 45 – Senior production operative
Former electrician Carl joined TFS just over two years ago, and is already relishing the great
benefits working as a production operative grants to his professional and personal life.
Carl, who ran his own business as an electrician in the leisure sector for 20 years, initially
took on a temporary contract as a production operative. He took a brief period of leave
during the UK lockdowns, before being welcomed back on a full time contract. A few months
later he was promoted to senior production operative, becoming a lead staff member in the
ongoing investment programme into new equipment and processing.
He works alongside his father- and brothers-in-law, and after working his shift every day is
able to pick his three young girls up from school.
“I don’t like sitting still,” Carl said. “I’ve worked since I was 13, I’ve always liked working with
my hands and I need variety in my job. So, I use my experience as an electrician to ensure
the machinery and production lines are working efficiently because I know if they’re not, it
impacts how effective the factory floor is.”
When he was self employed, Carl worked long hours in the evenings and over the weekends
– something he admits affected how much time he could spend with his eldest child. That’s
no longer something he has to worry about, and it’s the work/life balance which TFS enables
which motivates Carl to work hard; today, his responsibilities include training fellow staff on
machinery and he is an important member of the in-house maintenance team.
“There are a lot of benefits of working here, and you’ll get them if you work hard. You have
access to training, you can work alongside a strong team of people who’ll support you,
there’s a real family-feel to the business and it’s a stable, secure job. I see myself working
here for a long time to come.”
