Behind the Scenes at TFS – Sheldon Hutchinson, machine maintenance and operator
Sheldon Hutchinson, 29 – Machine maintenance and operator
Every now and again, a chance opportunity turns into something much bigger. This was the case for Sheldon Hutchinson, who was invited to provide some last-minute cover at the TFS factory when a new starter didn’t arrive for a Saturday shift. Twelve years later, he’s still with the business and foresees a positive future, too.
He said: “From covering that short shift on a temporary basis, I moved into a part time role working a couple of times a week alongside my original job as a plasterer. I weighed up my options and working with TFS full time was better for me financially, so I took a permanent job. I started on the shop floor, then gained my forklift truck licence then moved into machinery – it’s been quite a natural progression.”
Sheldon has a natural interest in machinery and engineering, but never considered he’d be lucky enough to have a long-term career in manufacturing.
He said: “I always thought I’d work in construction because I love being hands-on with machinery, but I didn’t think I’d go down the manufacturing route. But when things go as well as they have here, you start to see it as a career more than a job. That’s why I’m still here!
“I really enjoy the fast-paced environment, and that I have to think on my feet. There’s lots of different equipment around you that all need to work together for the factory to function, and it’s a privilege to play a role in that.”
Considering his future, Sheldon sees himself immersing into the world of manufacturing technology as a way of ensuring TFS continues to thrive.
He said: “As things continue to advance in our sector, I would really like to be part of the installation and maintenance of the newer machines and technologies coming in. I like to be in the know about new things and if I keep on top of that, it’s easier to work with them and fix them when needed – which is what keeps the business moving forwards.
“Every single day, I feel busy, involved and needed. Everyone here is essential, we couldn’t do it without each other and that’s another thing that makes working here special.”
